HISTORY & FACTS

A Distinguished History

Intramuros, "within the walls" was the site where Spanish adventurers founded the city of Manila. Since 1952, Intramuros has been the setting for the Lyceum of the Philippines. Nearby are leafy parks, centuries-old landmarks, and even cobble-stoned streets from a bygone era. There is a hint of those quieter, more relaxed times. The racket and congestion that come to mind at the mention of Manila is a comfortable distance away. Intramuros is being revived as History Town Philippines, the city's tourist centerpiece. Street fairs, concerts and other cultural events are staged year round here. Lyceum works in close cooperation with the Intramuros Administration.

A Presidential Legacy

History is very much a part of the Lyceum, named after lykeion, the grove in ancient Athens where Aristotle taught his pupils. The school was founded by Jose P. Laurel, philosopher, educator, and former President of the Republic. Veritas et fortitudo, truth and courage, sum up the Lyceum's higher ideals.

Historically, the Lyceum has the reputation for being a bastion of fearless nationalism. "No one can love the Filipinos more than the Filipinos themselves," the founder once said. Lyceum's educational vision is founded on principles he set down.

One enters the Lyceum through the "HALL OF HEROES" where busts of revered historical figures sculpted by the National Artist Guillermo Tolentino are enshrined. Their lives and ideas are the inspiration for generations of Lyceans.

"In our quest for a suitable type of education foir our people... we look to the geniuses of our own race for inspiration and enlightenment, to the great Filipinos of the past for a reinvigorated morality and sense of justice that alone can bring us salvation, freedome and happiness."
